Why am I walking on Sunday, October 17th?

A year ago in November, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 58. She told me on Thanksgiving. I'll never forget that day.

She is, however, an amazing fighter and incredibly stubborn - she's German, what did you expect? - and utilized her strengths to fight this battle! She underwent surgery in early December, followed by an intense number of chemotherapy sessions. If I thought the words 'my mom has cancer' were bad, nothing can top watching you loved one go through chemotherapy. It was hard to take; no matter what, you feel lost and want to do more... even if there's not much you can do. One day, I forced her to let me clean her house... just so I could feel useful.

All in all, we're in a happy place because she has overcome cancer! She won! She will be back to her oncologist's office every three months for a check-up, but has been reassured she's a winner!

Today, there is more hope than ever for people facing breast cancer. However, there is much work to be done. Every day, the American Cancer Society is helping people stay well by taking steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer or find it early, when it is most treatable; helping people get well with information, day-to-day help, and emotional support to guide them through every step of a breast cancer experience; by finding cures and promising new treatments through funding and conducting research; and by fighting back by working with lawmakers to help all women get access to screenings and care.

I believe that one day, breast cancer will never steal another year from anyones life and we will live in a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays. Thats why I'm walking in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. Not only is this my opportunity to join my community to fight back against breast cancer, it is a way to inspire hope by raising funds and awareness to help those facing the disease and save more lives.

And you can be a part of it, too.

I have signed up to walk and I hope you will join me in my effort by signing up to join my team or making a donation in support of my participation. Together, we can save lives from breast cancer!

Saturn in your life

There is buzz around the interwebs lately about the Saturn Return. I am not very into astrology in terms of visiting an astrologist, etc. except when I read something that makes sense. Everything I am reading about this Saturn Return resonates with me in loud ALL CAPS style wording.

Apparently, the Saturn Return typically happens between the ages of 27-30 and again later in life. I am going to focus on this first Return since that applies to me and my life. I did not know what this Saturn Return was until a recent visit to the Ruby Room wherein I met Philip who discussed my numerology with me. I booked the appointment with 'fun' in mind, and left mind-boggled. I told him nothing but my birthday, and he knew a whole lotta details about me! But, I regress...

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c222/stuckinasuitcase/astroblogos/saturn_pink_big.gif

The Saturn Return is all about the person feeling the need for change. Typically, during this stage in life, people will reassess their career, their family, their relationships and may even make drastic changes. While endings are quite possible, beginnings are quite more prevalent. If you know me, you understand why this is interesting to me particularly.

After seven years working for an extremely successful commercial real estate firm, I quit last April with new ideas of what direction my life would go. I went drastic in my change of direction; we're talking drastic! Not everyone will be as intense as me or make as crazy of changes in their lives, but everyone will do something. In fact, I found a great explanation of the four types of 20 something's ideas of movement during this time....

The following is derived from a google-search suggested website:

There tend to be four generalized paths of possibility here.

(1) Individuals who have chosen in their twenties a life structure which is really very suited to their character, may simply solidify their gains. They may receive an important promotion, take on additional responsibilities, gain increased power, but generally are just expanding on the path already selected. (This is a relatively small group among the total.)

(2) Individuals who have not really settled into a life structure, who have been experimenting, or wandering, seeking and searching in their twenties, will feel the pressure of time. A group of them will make their first real commitment at this point. They will settle into a career (as opposed to "just a job"). They will get married. They will select a life structure which gives them a sense of stability, but fits what they've learned about themselves through the years of "trying on" different things in their twenties. They will set their sights on accomplishments, and be ready to really dig in, building a foundation for the future.

(3) Individuals who have also searched in their twenties, but not developed skills, self-confidence, or necessary expertise, may continue to flounder. They will also feel a sense of pressure, of time passing them by, of wanting to do something that will last--that will make a "real" difference. Without adequate preparation or commitment, however, they tend to end up feeling blocked and frustrated. Nothing really works for them. Nothing comes together. Their efforts seem futile. To escape this trap, they must go back, build up their skills, competence and willingness to be ractical about responsibilities. They have to take more time to catch up with their peers.

(4) Individuals who have chosen in their twenties a life structure which is not very suited to their character, or who have simply changed a great deal, will make breaks. The old ways will feel confining, limiting, restrictive. Old patterns of behavior seem formalized and lifeless. In such cases, the people involved may end relationships, quit or be fired from jobs, move, or otherwise alter the basic structure of their lives. Sometimes they break out before they know what they are going toward. They simply know that they cannot continue to work with the current design. After (or while) making their breaks, these people will actively seek a firm commitment. They will look for a life tasks which will provide them with a sense of achievement, mastery and competence. They will seek out responsibilities that will help them to feel they are making a real contribution and gaining expertise.

Well, I guess I'm #4!

I think it's quite fitting that we are experiencing this change in our lives, this notion of moving-forward and changing, during a time when the entire country is evolving and learning how to live differently.

Quite interesting! Now back to thinking about style....

AND MORE…

Busy. Busy.

I'm currently working on planning something huge. Enormous, even! I'm trying my hand at event coordination; but not a small intimate affair. This event will host 300 ladies, 20 vendors and several entertainment avenues such as a fashion show, a yoga demonstration, perhaps a dance-off, and more! This being my first time planning an event of this type, I am admittedly a bit nervous.

The nervousness is not for the end result; I am confident the event will be superb. The nervousness is purely in the day-to-day. This week, for instance, I am focusing on selecting a venue. I've found several that I like, but what if the one I choose is not perfect? Ah... the ubiquities of 'perfect'.

I am bringing all of this up because I thought it might be interesting for you, blog readers, to track my progress and live through the process with me! The following are photos from a recent, and comparable, event in Seattle that I attended... this is our 'target'... let's see how far we land from it!

CHOW DOWN: Celebration with an Elderflower Royale

The Champagne Cocktail was a favorite of the ’30s, and now it’s starting to come back. Adding a little elderflower liqueur brings it into the 21st century.

What to buy: St. Germain is an elderflower liqueur that has won over bartenders. It can be found at high-end liquor stores and online.

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 small sugar cube
  • 10 dashes angostura bitters
  • 1 ounce St-Germain elderflower liqueur
  • 6 ounces chilled brut sparkling wine
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Soak sugar cube with bitters and place in the bottom of a chilled champagne flute.
  2. Add elderflower liqueur; top with sparkling wine, and serve.
With the craziest of crazy weeks coming to a close, and smiles remaining on the entire team's faces... we all deserve a toast to CRAVE Chicago and the first edition guide that is going to print in a matter of moments! Thus, my desire to share with you a proper toasting beverage, the Elderflower Royale... recipe via CHOW.com.

Time to get Serious: Sound Advice

A friend of mine was recently engaged and is currently researching all of her wedding planning goodness [or however it should be described]. She asked me to research and discuss something very serious with all of you: What are the two most important aspects of a fun + fabulous wedding?

I know my answer... the music and the sweets table!

http://amyatlas.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/carnival.jpg
Perhaps that is not the most important thing for a wedding... but it is certainly the most important thing for every other kind of party! Alas, you're asking a girl that lives off of chocolate... what else would I say!?!

Do me a favor please!

It's sites like Favor Affair that make me want to host a party. My friends like to tease me that I love sending invitations and receiving RSVPs so much, that I will plan a party just to get that thrill. Well, the same goes for prepping for all aspects of the party: the favors, the meal (with help from Prince Charming, of course) and the decor. Especially the decor!

Thankfully, Favor Affair's selections offer more than just a takeaway... these items are so chic I can incorporate them into the decor! I can't wait to plan and/or host my next party! Actually, if you're having a party.. I'd love to plan it! Kidding... kind of.
