I'm not even kidding. Other vendors may hope I am kidding because they are getting tired of competing with Ben Mahoney, Stephanie Mueller & Leap Weddings, but I'm not kidding. Leap Weddings mantra is "Film - Hair - Fun" and they are experts at all three!

This week we received our complete set of wedding videos from Leap Weddings. Whoa. Talk about sensory and emotion overload. We laughed. We cried. We watched all eight videos four times! (Ok, maybe I've watched about ten times now.) From the team's professionalism and invisibility while shooting to the flawless execution of production, we could not be happier with Leap Weddings.

It's funny. A lot of family & friends were quite surprised when, during the wedding planning process, Prince Charming and I announced we were not hiring a photographer and instead putting all of our budget into videography. Receivers of this information were astonished, annoyed and quick to try to negate our idea. Boy were they wrong. This was the smartest thing we could have done. {Disclaimer: It's also easier to make this decision when you have family & friends that are pretty dang talented behind the lens, like Cali Fagan.}

Did I also mention the team has a hair division? Steph turned by messy head of hair into something gorgeous. We had tested a style a few months prior to the wedding, but on the day of Steph turned the gorgeousness up a notch and executed a style that really completed my whole look. I walked into that day with nothing but confidence knowing I had been well taken care of and looked amazing. I felt pretty amazing thanks to her and makeup artist Eric Holt. Everyone in the wedding party that had the pleasure of working with Leap Wedding's hair team expressed the need for Steph to move-in with them and be available for hairstyling every day of the week.

We were blessed to work with some of the best wedding vendors on the planet in preparation for our big celebration. From flagged straws to a jamming DJ, from a specialty cocktail to a dress to die-for, every detail was perfect in our eyes. I'm going to take credit for some of this - my research skills are incredible! As the bride & groom, we imagined, created and managed every single detail. It was a lot of work but fun, fabulous and I miss the planning process already.

We're more than a week away from our honeymoon, but I'm already dreaming. Two weeks in Italy with the man of my dreams is going to be heaven. Sure, there will be some pretty sweaty motorcycle rides through Tuscany (it's supposed to be in the mid-80's while we're visiting)... but we'll be eating some of the best food, seeing some of the most beautiful sights and enjoying some of the best culture/ambience in the World!

Trent has done an amazing job scheduling our honeymoon! We've been talking about going to Italy for our honeymoon since our last trip to Europe (in 2007!)... but have never talked about where in Italy we would visit. After weeks of research and deliberation, a decision has been made and hotels have bene booked. We're scheduled to visit Rome, Bologna, Cinque Terre and Montepulciano (plus every little town in between) via motocicletta (that's motorcycle) and then spend several days living the Mediterranean life in Anacapri!

Everything looks so beautiful and memorable, I don't know which we're going to enjoy more! In true fashion, Trent's answer will tie to wherever he had his favorite meal. My answer, however, is typically un-measurable; it's a vibe, a feeling.

As we prepare for departure, rest assured... we have registered our trip abroad with the local Embassies and have a police officer watching our home. Did you think I wouldn't? I've been talking publicly about leaving the country for months - that's asking for trouble! ;)

We opted to not have 'colors' for our wedding decor for a couple of reasons. (1) The hotel is already beautifully decorated and (2) with a focus on grey and neutrals, we'll really get to see each other. Each face will pop, each outfit will shine, each smile will sparkle and all of the individuals will take center stage, rather than the decor.

It's really exciting to see all of the little details coming together; and I thought it might be fun to show you some of the photos I've seen online that have served as inspiration for the last 11 months...

Whoo hoo! Probably one of the most fun and yet stressful elements of the wedding planning is complete! The following is what I've communicated to our guests.

Yes, you're sitting by someone you don't know. No, you're not going to have a good view. Yes, your seat will probably be wobbly. No, you're not going to have enough elbow room.Yes, you'll be the last to be served dinner. No, the sound is not going to be loud enough.. or maybe yes, music will be blaring in your ears! No, you won't be able to read your menu. Yes, outside lights will be in your eyes. Actually, there is no assigned seating and it's first-come-first-served. Oh, did we mention this gig is BYOB?

Of course, we're kidding... on some of the comments! But one thing is for certain, our guests won't find out where they're sitting until it's time to eat!

We're meeting with the hotel's chefs in two weeks to discuss cocktails, appetizers, meals and cake! After we were asked for our opinions on the cake's look, I quickly realized we had too many ideas. Everyday I think of something else that might be the perfect one... today I saw the one above and added it to the list. Not sure about the purple, but LOVE the textures.

Prince Charming and I, as you know, are tying the knot this Fall... we're getting ready for our tasting in just under a month and are salivating at the prospects. Today, I happened upon a blog that featured photos of dishes put together by the same team for another wedding at our venue. These photos did nothing for me, but make me very hungry and get me very excited! Accompanying commentary courtesy of blogger Fat Skinny Girl.

Deconstructed salad nicoise for the cocktail reception

Out of nine or so small bites we chose for the cocktail reception, about six or so were influenced by New Orleans-- where we first fell in love. Shown are the mini crab cakes with remoulade sauce.

My dad really wanted pigs in a blanket. That wasn't happening, so we played with the idea of open face roast beef sandwiches but with beef carpaccio on toasted brioche.

Think that's spinach? We gave a subtle nod to New Orleans by having the chef create them with mustard greens.

The first course was a duo of spring pea soup and a greens salad topped with watermelon and shaved fennel.

The tenderloin tops a bed of pureed yukon potatoes and thyme jus. Not shown is the incredible halibut with sauteed spinach and pickled pearl onions.

Our wedding cake featured a mint julep ganache filling. Bravo for the pastry team at RIA. They made my dream wedding cake a reality!

Our sweet surprises table featured many of our favorite desserts: s'mores with toasted marshmellows, lemon tarts, bourbon pecan tarts and French macaroons.

The French macaroons reminded me of my teenage years. Through high school, I worked at Provence Breads and Cafe on 21st Ave. in Nashville (in Hillsboro Village).

On June 1st, 2011 the performers of Aloft Circus Arts mesmerized and thrilled the guests at the Chicago Peninsula Hotel's anniversary party; stilted performers greeted the guests outside, while inside the guests were treated to top-tier aerial and ground performances throughout the evening. Once considered as taboo, the circus arts are quickly gaining popularity as both an alternative to traditional workout programs and a unique form of entertainment for parties, conferences or other special events.

Aloft Circus Arts, founded by Shayna Swanson in 2005, is a collective of earth-bound and aerial circus artists; the group is one of the most diverse and talented in the country.

“Aerial training not only provides a unique workout experience, but it allows everyone to explore amazing feats they are surprised they can accomplish,” Aloft Company Director and founder Shayna Swanson explains. “Now more in demand than ever, the performers of Aloft Circus Arts needed an even bigger space to hone their death-defying talents. The future hubby and I have decided we need a little vacation. It's been almost a year since we've had a vacation, which is very unlike us, and the crawfish & po boys are calling our names. Have you been to Nawlins? Once or twice, you say? Me too... this is my second trip.

Fairly new thai restaurant in Bucktown that is so darned good, we've enjoyed three weeks in a row! Silom 12 is located in the old Cafe Matou space on Milwaukee Avenue, just south of Oakley Avenue.

The modern take on traditional thai dishes up a plethora of delicious lunch and dinner options. From $8 pad thai (their version is paht thai) to $16 duck delight, the menu leaves nothing to be desired. Discriminating tastes will be pleased.

Bonus? Bubble tea. Yum!

In my desire to beautifully decorate our home, I purchased four pounds of cranberries to fill a very large vase that is also accompanied by squigly tree branches with silver bead tinsel... anyways... I accidently purchased four pounds of dried cranberries. What does this mean? A couple of things:

I purchased the wrong kind of cranberries.
These can not be placed in a vase for a month's time, and must get used-up quickly!
My family members will be enjoying many, many cranberry treats this holiday season. Get ready, folks!

Please help me come up with several unique cranberry recipes... bars, granola, drinks, anything!

Wedding theme and write fancy

When considering the overall theme of a wedding, a loving couple could quite possibly get very overwhelmed! What theme for their special day will perfectly sum-up the love they share or the life they've built? How can they capture these feelings in one event aura? Not sure. I haven't figured that out yet.

But, we have zeroed-in on one thing so far. Prince Charming and I know one thing's for sure... Our special day will be full of love, family, elegance and splashed with a whole lot of whimsy.

The first way I know how to capture that is by figuring out what an invitation may look like. It seems the only way to roll all of that into one is with a card full of exquisite writing and a beautiful message. A card written with love, calligraphy to be precise.

I love these options! The dark card stock with light writing are really pulling me in right now. So majestic, whimsical and alluring!

Or, at least that's the band wagon I'm on today. Stay tuned to find out more!

Why am I walking on Sunday, October 17th?

A year ago in November, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 58. She told me on Thanksgiving. I'll never forget that day.

She is, however, an amazing fighter and incredibly stubborn - she's German, what did you expect? - and utilized her strengths to fight this battle! She underwent surgery in early December, followed by an intense number of chemotherapy sessions. If I thought the words 'my mom has cancer' were bad, nothing can top watching you loved one go through chemotherapy. It was hard to take; no matter what, you feel lost and want to do more... even if there's not much you can do. One day, I forced her to let me clean her house... just so I could feel useful.

All in all, we're in a happy place because she has overcome cancer! She won! She will be back to her oncologist's office every three months for a check-up, but has been reassured she's a winner!

Today, there is more hope than ever for people facing breast cancer. However, there is much work to be done. Every day, the American Cancer Society is helping people stay well by taking steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer or find it early, when it is most treatable; helping people get well with information, day-to-day help, and emotional support to guide them through every step of a breast cancer experience; by finding cures and promising new treatments through funding and conducting research; and by fighting back by working with lawmakers to help all women get access to screenings and care.

I believe that one day, breast cancer will never steal another year from anyones life and we will live in a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays. Thats why I'm walking in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. Not only is this my opportunity to join my community to fight back against breast cancer, it is a way to inspire hope by raising funds and awareness to help those facing the disease and save more lives.

And you can be a part of it, too.

It only took five & a half years for Prince Charming to succumb to my advances, and it was worth every minute! Last week we became engaged!

We get to wake up in each other's arms every morning (most of the time), share a hug in celebration or remorse, high-five at every touchdown, enjoy delicious meals and all-around be a mushy, envy-building bundle of love. We're lucky people to have found one another (thanks to our mutual friend, who helped speed-up the process).

We're extremely elated about this time in our lives. The feeling of being engaged, the moments of wedding celebration and the collaboration of two families coming together to support two 'kids' building their life together. We're loved very much by both of our families (maybe sometimes too much!) and they could not be happier that we've decided it was time to move into the next phase of the relationship. We feel the same.

But, let's talk about what you're really interested in - the planning of all of the events that follow an engagement. Side note: why is it that 99% of women are obsessed with planning events? Anyways...

I'm looking forward to using this blog as a spot to throw ideas and see what sticks. Feel free to share your thoughts on all items I share - don't be shy, everyone has an opinion!

Vegas Whirlwind

When I discovered I was without plans for Labor Day, I quickly phoned my cousin in San Antonio (let's call her 'Texas') to see if she'd enjoy a little summertime Chi... Little did I know what she'd have in store for me. As you've probably guessed, based alone by the name of this blog post, we ended up spending three nights of jammed packed fun in Vegas. Our first non-hometown visit together, this was a weekend of excitement waiting to happen.

The night before I set-off into the other world, I packed. And packed. And packed. I thought I was overpacking, but turns out I had the smallest suitcase in the entire town.

I did being four pairs of shoes though. I think that's pretty standard for Vegas, right?

Texas has planned this trip with several girlfriends, one of which has a friend that is, lucky for us, one of the most phenomenal concierges in Sin City. He set us, five unassuming girls from San Antonio, New York and Chicago, up to be pleasantly busy attending the best parties in town. (Many thanks to him, by the way, and prince charming and I will gladly return the favor should a Chicago visit be on the agenda!)

Upon landing, I met up with the girls at Fashion Show mall for some spending action. A dressing room, or four, later we're headed to the MGM Grand Hotel for showers and make-overs.

Friday night was filled with adventures of Tao. Both dinner and festivities were consumed within the walls of the home of the best hiphop I heard all weekend.

Saturday Texas and I did some last minute shopping and headed to the pool to meet up with the gang.

Side note: the lion habitat is found at MGM. Always a good viewing opportunity.

As you could imagine, with five girls living in one room for three nights could get pretty crowded, pretty quickly. I decided the hallway would be my powder room and did my hair and make-up each night under the watchful gaze of Sammy Davis Jr. He's quite the opinionated on-looker with much advice on this lip color or that.

Saturday night we headed to Craftsteak, a spot not to be missed on your next visit. It was at this locale that we also ha our first celebrity sighting. LeAnne Rimes was dining at the table next to us in celebration o her birthday. Like any good, respectful Chicagoan, I ignore her presence. Right after i took her photo on the sly. Just kidding.

Debauchery continued at Tryst that night, a night that found me asleep at least 6 hours before the rest of the group retuned 'home.' Ah, to be young again! ;)

Tryst has an amazing ambience that is best enjoyed perhaps NOT on a holiday weekend.

Sunday I stayed true to my core and visited my favorite spa on the planet, The Bathhouse at The Hotel within the confines of Mandalay Bay. One word describes my afternoon: delightful. Oh, and I did receive a bit of a sunburn that morning at the pool. Last sun of the summer, I was willing to take it all in!

Our last evening of indulgence was enhanced by a wonderful meal at Yellow Tail at the Bellagio, overlooking the fountain. You'd like us to enjoy the awe inspiring show every 15 minutes right behind our table? Don't mind if we do!

The night inched along to Pure, where we were blessed with a table and bottle service on the roof, complete with personal body guard, of course.

A wonderful time was had by all this weekend, and I'm especially happy about being able to share this time with my cousin. I love her to pieces and this was a great time for us together!

We are truly thankful for the gracious hospitality of our favorite Las Vegas-Ian, who shall remain nameless to protect his identity. He certainly came thru for us on many counts, including but not limited to the hotel, dinner reservations and our after hour festivities. Thanks, H, for looking out for us!

East Coast Traveling

Prince Charming embarked on an 11 day motorcycle trip from Chicago to Nova Scotia and back last Wednesday morning. I caught up with him by way of flying to Boston (that's a whole story, itself!) for a weekend of fun and good food in Maine!

We rented a cottage with another great couple that enjoys travel, the sites, the motos and delicious eats as much as we do. Say hi, friends:

After a day of riding the coast and gobbling up lobster rolls, we arrived at out locale just in time for dinner!

First, we quickly 'checked-in' to our home away from home...

Our cottage sits right on the ocean and is verrrrrry clean. I am really happy with the place as far as cleanliness, floorplan, price and location. We're just north of Camden so we are in our own little town of Lincolnvile but are close enough to touristy Camden that we can head over there in 5 min drive. The cottage is owned by an adorable couple that also own the restaurant next door (The Whales Tooth) and several other cottages.

Last night I had a migraine, so I went to bed around 8, but I have a feeling this side of the country is going to continue to grow on me.

As I perused Google Reader tonight, I breezed by post after post about the upcoming 4th of July... until I saw this:

Homemade Strawberry Shortcake Recipe
Jul 1st, 2010 Desserts

Strawberry Shortcake

4 cups fresh strawberries, rinsed, hulled, and sliced
4 – 6 tablespoons sugar (adjust to suit your own taste)
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
4 tablespoons sugar
1/3 cup cold butter, cut into small pieces
1/2 cup cold milk
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
whipped cream (I prefer the real thing)

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

In a medium bowl, stir together the strawberries and sugar. Set strawberries aside to macerate while you prepare the shortcakes. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and sugar. Using a pastry blender or your fingertips, and working quickly, cut or rub the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs. Add milk and vanilla all at once to flour mixture and stir until just combined.

Using a large spoon, drop mixture into four equal piles on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake 12 – 15 minutes at 425 degrees. Remove biscuits to a rack and let cool for a few minutes. To serve, split a warm biscuit in two, spoon 1/4 of the berry mixture over the bottom half (make sure you include lots of the juice), top with whipped cream and the other half of the biscuit.

The industry forum will last 4 weeks and cost $364. Each session will last 1 week. There will be 2 forums each week that will last approximately 2.5 hours.
